But once I click the new game and choose the difficulty, the loading screen will show for a few minutes and then it crashes.

I have a wireless Xbox unofficial controller - doesn't work properly, when pressing the stick to go forward it just stutters etc. however I had an old PS3 controller in a drawer - this works perfectly until you get to a fight scene where its an FMV that prompts you to press x, it then disconnects and you get killed.
